Day 2 of #COMM506: Using and managing communication networks – aka: understanding social networks.
Today we had the pleasure of Dr. Raul Pacheco-Vega presenting his insights on how to balance your personal and professional profile online.
My take home thoughts:
- people will only remember what they think is useful – define your online presence, it is your “footprint”
- “be generous online”
- online life is real – use social media to open personal and professional doors
- note to self – “your professional self can be human”

Great summary! What tips do you think you’ll use from today’s presentation? I particularly loved the reminders that everyone makes mistakes, be generous with your sharing and try to reciprocate.

Thanks for your comments Hillary. I think what resonated in Dr Pacheco-Vega’s presentation was the idea of “balance in creating one’s online profile” as the essence of the “footprint” that you present to others. I have been quite hesitant with my online footprint, as unsure of which footprint to leave – professional or personal. Perhaps this reflects my status as a digital immigrant-settler in the world of digital natives. Something to reflect upon.

Thanks for the recap, Dianne. There were some good points there and I think his advice to the politician was valuable – there are complexities that pop up with all of this content-generation, and it’s important to stick with what you think is right, and to always stay authentic.
PS. Tomorrow, I will help you change this profile photo that is associated with your ‘deliuk’ alias! 🙂

What a wonderful summary, concise and succinct. I completely agree, it`s important to have an online footprint that you can control and that you can use to build your personal and professional networks. Thanks again for having me!
